New Zealand fur seals in the south of New Zealand

Little is known on the impact of New Zealand fur seals on marine ecosystems in New Zealand because studies on their feeding habits are scarce. This project aimed at investigating the foraging range and feeding behaviour of New Zealand fur seals at three breeding colonies in the north of the South Island (Kaikoura, Cape Foulwind, and Tonga island) in order to quantify the potential trophic competition with fishing trawlers. Lactating NZ fur seals were captured at each site during December 2010, January 2012, and June 2012. Blubber (fatty acid analysis) and whiskers (stable isotope analysis) were collected, and animals were equipped with telemetry to record movements at sea. This project has been funded by a postdoctoral fellowship from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and supported by the Department of Conservation, NZ
